Taller Los Tepalcates
The story of the workshop “Los Tepalcates” is based in the unusual combination of tradition and creativity that characterizes the craftswomen of Santa María Atzompa. Founded in the early 1990s by sisters Asunción and Laura Enriquez Chávez, the workshop is distinguished by its rootedness in the traditional techniques of the region.
Sirilo Enriquez, the father of the talented artisans, played a crucial role in the development of their work by transmitting confidence to innovate to the traditional craft process. His early experimentation, such as embossed drawing on a clay surface, marked a milestone in the search for new forms of expression within the techniques known in Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca.
Taller Los Tepalcates not only engages in creative exploration but also plays a significant role in shaping the local crafts market. Their outstanding work in traditional techniques and originality contributed to the recognition of the Chávez family in the community and beyond. This recognition not only honors their craftsmanship but also their ability to innovate and elevate traditional art to new heights.
