Mauricio Paniagua + Tony Moxham MT Objects
Mauricio Paniagua and Tony Moxham have lived and worked together in Mexico City for 17 years since they moved from New York in 2005. Their work reflects an intimate knowledge of Mesoamerican pre-Hispanic cultures and worldviews with a focus on the innovative use of simple materials. They function as artists within the design industry, albeit with an approach rarely centered on the regular resolution of design problems. Instead, their work is informed by the intersection of the emotional and the irrational in design, popular culture, and decorative arts. Much of their work is treated as sculpture independent of function.
They had their first solo exhibition, “Built & Broken,” at AGO Projects in 2021, and their work has been exhibited or featured by institutions such as MoMA and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, Vogue Living, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. MT’s ceramic works are meticulously handmade in Mexico City by a team of young artisans whose hand skills vary little from pre-Hispanic times.
